An IIT Madras Aided Firm is Powering Households in Telengana with Solar Energy
Tamil Nadu is all set to light up around 300 households in Telangana with solar energy. Developed by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Madras, the solar powered systems are being distributed by the Southern Power Distribution Company of Telangana Limited (TSSPDCL) and Rural Electrification Corporation.
These solar powered systems have been conducted and commercialized by Cygni Energy, a firm incubated by IIT madras. Already installing the power systems in the houses in June this year, the performance of these installed systems is being remotely monitored with data being connected through mobile phones. A central server synchronizes the data collected from the installed systems.
India receives abundant sunlight throughout the year. But ironically, there are millions of homes in India which are either not connected to the grid or suffer from power outages for the major part of the day. The solar DC inverter-less technology that have been deployed in the 300 households of Devarakonda, Telangana have provided a relief to this power shortage demonstrating how a small 125W solar panel on home rooftops can transform the dynamics of electricity generation in India.
The inverterless system which comprises of a 125W Solar Panel, a 1kWh battery, an Inverterless controller unit and DC loads operating on a 48V DC internal distribution line have been installed in all the houses of Deverakonda. It powers a DC fan, a DC tube light, two DC bulbs, a DC mobile charger, a DC power socket and a remote controller to operate the fan and tube light to generate electricity.
Verizon Data Services has funded the entire project investing around Rs 75 lakh in it. Ramunigundla Thanda, Kesya Thanda, Jogi Thanda and Mantriya Thanda are the four rural hamlets of Devarakonda Mandal in Nalgonda district of Telangana, about 100 km away from Hyderabad which will be illuminated under this proposal.
This decision has surely brought respite for these hamlets which together comprise 300 households, most of them falling under the ‘Low Income’ category. During the monsoons and ‘peak-demand’ times, these households are the worst affected suffering from frequent power outages.
